Operation Room assistant

23 april 2019
Job description
**We are currently looking to hire new certified employees on a permanent contract. Applicants for this vacancy will be invited to have an orientation call or visit the department for a day and become acquainted with our hospital.**
Surgical assistants with a sense of responsibility for quality, safety and timeliness
As a fully qualified OR assistant (that is, fully certified of almost certified by finishing your education in a couple of months), you are ambitious and enthusiastic. You have an inherent sense of responsibility, which is shared with the dedicated OR team at our medical center, to deliver high quality care during complex or acute surgery. In this multidisciplinary team of specialists, you will do all you can to ensure that surgery takes place as smoothly as possible. Our medical center is also a Level 1 trauma center. Due to the complexity of the cases, surgeries regularly take unexpected turns. As an OR assistant, you are responsible for ensuring – in all circumstances – that surgery is safe, is performed at the highest quality standards and stays on schedule whenever possible. Especially in unexpected situations, the work of an OR assistant at our medical center is truly challenging. Your organizational and improvisational skills are tested to the limit at those times: you have to be able to think and act outside the standard frameworks without losing sight of patient safety and the objective of the surgery.

Moreover, you work in an ambitious, innovative department with an academic research focus. This means that you are directly involved in the latest developments in your field. You deal with unusual cases in which we can really make a difference for the patient. By deploying new methods (such as MITeC and semi-elective OR), you help to minimize the admission and treatment time of patients, establish the correct priorities in the treatment of patients and further optimize the quality of care for patients. Maximum patient safety remains the most important objective, followed by efficient, distinctive and person-centered care.

The fascinating cases that you encounter at an academic hospital give you all the depth and space needed to realize your personal ambitions within this wonderful profession. Whether it concerns your role within a dedicated and close-knit OR team or your involvement in multidisciplinary collaboration with other departments in the care chains of Radboud university medical center, the dynamics and unique character of the department ensure that every day is different. As an OR assistant, you are continuously challenged to realize your full potential.

OR assistants who want to make a difference in our academic OR
As a fully qualified OR assistant (that is, fully certified or almost certified), you are ambitious and enthusiastic. You are also intrinsically motivated to contribute to the development of innovative and person-centered OR care. As a result, you have an enormous drive to realize your full potential, and you have the mindset, personal skills and capacities that are needed to achieve this. You are ambitious and you want to continue your professional and personal development by choosing a position as an OR assistant in another country, with a different language and culture.

You deliberately choose an academic hospital to continue your career. This means, among other things, that you enjoy working with students, interns and researchers or participating in scientific research. You also enjoy working with residents in training.

You like to take an extra step in your work, even if you are not asked to do so directly. Like us, you want to lead the way and excel in providing the best academic healthcare. You also take the initiative and you want to work according to the latest techniques and methods. You have up-to-date knowledge of the innovations in your field (techniques, materials, instruments and equipment). You are a true team player, but you can also work independently. You know how to deal with stress in a profession that is characterized by acute situations on a daily basis, and you have the flexibility to work optimally under all circumstances. You are willing to work all shifts (primarily on-call). You also have affinity with, or experience in, one of the specialisms of our dedicated teams (Surgery, Neurosurgery/Plastic Surgery, Gynecology/Urology, ENT/OMS, Cardiothoracic Surgery and Pediatric Surgery). And above all, you are very skilled at working with patients. Delivering the best personalized healthcare and maximum patient safety are the most important goals in your work.

The OR department

Working in a close-knit team with room for personal input and development.
As an OR assistant, you are a member of a dedicated and close-knit team consisting of approximately 15 colleagues. These teams are managed by an operational manager. You work in an environment in which we prioritize learning from each other on a daily basis and in which less experienced OR assistants are personally and intensively supervised by a more experienced colleague. Providing honest feedback on each other's performance is essential to continuously improving our work; we regard personal input from everyone as crucial. We all work hard to stay at the forefront of our profession in the Netherlands and abroad.

If you are interested, as an OR assistant, you can become part of an Independent Removal Team (IRT). These IRT’s are deployed during organ donation and organ transplantation. This team consists of two surgeons, two OR assistants, an anesthesiologist and anesthesia assistant. This is a specialized team that performs organ removal at the OR complex of the hospital where the donor is located. The IRT travels in a specially equipped van containing all materials that are needed.
